LA Times comments on Lesson 9
The Los Angeles Times just published an editorial about the anti-gay bullying curriculum passed by Alameda Unified’s school board on May 27 by a 3-2 vote. To quote:
The Alameda school board deserves praise for its willingness to reckon with the subject and for its commitment to protecting gay and lesbian students. But it went too far in adopting a curriculum that introduces topics involving sexuality at an age when most children are ill-equipped to consider them.

Even Los Angeles gets it! I thought Alameda was better than this. I guess a few people in elected office can truly shipwreck a beautiful community.
To the extent that the curriculum is about gay sex as opposed to just gay relationships, I do think parents should have the same opt-out choice as they do for existing (heterosexual) sex education courses. Can anyone enlighten me about the portion of the curriculum that talks about the logistics of gay sex?
Hi Jill,
I’m pretty sure that none of it does.
The complaints that I’ve read are that there is no way to talk about “gay relationships” without inherently talking about gay sex, because “gay relationships” are defined by “gay sex” or gay sexuality.
I’m not taking a position on that argument, just stating it as input to the discussion.
