Island sports: Alameda Little League update

Scores from May 9-16, 2009

Majors Division

Tapioca Express Mariners 13, Victor P. Republicano Jr., CPA Yankees 2
Ryan Fong was on the mound for the Mariners on May 16, and he pitched 4 2/3 innings, struck out 10 and gave up two runs. Nels Bergeron closed the game, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and hit a single, a double, scored twice and drove in two runs. Joey Lopez drove in a run with a single and Matt Esparza batted in three runs with a double. Derek Lodge went two for two and scored four times. Kaleo Johnson hit a single and a triple, scored twice and drove in a run. For the Yankees, Vincent Republicano pitched the first inning followed by Kevin Andrada, who struck out seven in three innings. Dominic Taylor closed the game. Offensively, Dominic Taylor hit a double and drove in a run and Trevor Patrick batted in a run with a single. Maddy Lewis and Ryan Belson both singled and scored for the Yankees.

AA division

Alameda Care Center Rockhounds 9, David W. Johnson, DDS Defenders 8
On May 16, the Rockhounds built an early 4-0 lead with key hits from Donald Stanifer and Tristan Wiley. For the Defenders, Chad Dali scored a pair of runs, Jason Cavalli had two hits and an RBI and Ian Joyce drove in two runs in the sixth inning to put his team in the lead, 8-7. In the bottom of the inning, the Rockhounds’ Jacob Yalung tied the game with a single and Mason Layag brought home the game-winner when he beat out a single on the infield.

Kevin Kennedy, LLC Diamond Jaxx 9, Alameda Care Center Rockhounds 7
On May 11, the Diamond Jaxx came from behind to erase a 6-4 deficit with a five-run fifth inning.  Davis Tansey, Jake Nations and Jake Gibbons all had run-scoring singles in the big inning. Jake Gibbons also closed out the game with two strong innings, with four strikeouts.  For the Rockhounds, Max Swinderman went three for three with three doubles and two RBIs. Tristan Wiley pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five, and contributed a pair of hits and an RBI. Tenoa Swayne also had a pair of hits and an RBI.

David W. Johnson, DDS Defenders 11, Alameda Care Center Rockhounds 2
On May 9, the Defenders built an early 5-0 lead with two RBIs from Ian Joyce, who would also close out the game pitching two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Matthew Yep scored three runs and Zachary Repsold contributed a pair of RBIs. For the Rockhounds, Ryan Lym had a pair of hits and two RBIs and Donald Stanifer also had a pair of hits. Max Swinderman also scored twice for the Rockhounds.

A Division

New Logic Research Scrappers 11, Bancroft Pediatrics Sand Gnats 9
On May 16, Jordan Givens launched two home runs, a three-run blast and a solo shot, to put the Scrappers in the lead. Hits by Kai Lara, Jack Farner, Gabe Castilla and Mark Makishima extended the Scrappers’ lead. The Sand Gnats fought back, with Ryan Sparks and Blaine Beckwith bringing in runs in the first. Armen Phelps and Ryan Finer singled in the second inning, and Michael Waldman followed with a two-run double. Waldman also defended well throughout the game, catching three pop-ups, including a dramatic “back-up” catch to support his teammate, but Givens’ two home runs proved to be too much for the Sand Gnats to overcome.
