Today’s must-read: The Chron on The Don
Per Susan Sward and Lance Williams at the San Francisco Chronicle, federal prosecutors in San Francisco have closed their five-year-old corruption probe into former state Senate leader Don Perata and his son, Nick, without filing charges. But now, federal prosecutors in Sacramento have taken up the case.
Per the story, the Sacramento crew picked up the case at the request of the San Francisco folks last fall. And Perata and his son are none too happy about the continuation of the probe: They’ve complained to Congress and the U.S. Justice Department that they think the case was moved in order to sidestep the statute of limitations.
It says the FBI was investigating Perata to see if he got illegal kickbacks from family, friends and associates. A spokesman for Perata said the case’s move to Sacramento was politically motivated.
