Today’s must-read: Off to the races

Superblogger Lauren Do has been on fire this week, leading the headlines with posts about kindergarten enrollment, an explosive letter that’s been circulting at city hall … and today’s post, about the controversy over car racing events out at Alameda Point.

A group came to the city council, sitting as the redevelopment board, last week, asking that they be allowed to host more racing events at the Point. Businesses there said they don’t want to deal with the noise, but the council decided to give the racers a test run to see how it all works out.

But now, it appears there is one thing that could stand in the racers’ path: the California Least Tern. Turns out the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is saying the races violate their “biological opinion” about the bird, and any racing events would need a vetting through the Endangered Species Act before they could proceed.

Lauren’s got the full summary here, and for earlier posts on it, check out the folks at Action Alameda here.

Hi Michele: I think only one business said that the noise might be a problem. The other business, Rock Wall, came in to preempt any decision to give away all the open weekends because they had an idea for a "green event" sometime in the fall.
