The Journal’s Peter Hegarty has posted a lovely piece on longtime Alameda Times-Star columnist Everett Johannes, who died Monday morning. He was 86.

Johannes, whose family moved to Alameda when he was 12, was always determined to become a writer, Hegarty reports. He began many columns with the line “You’re an Alamedan if …” and he had a deep knowledge of the Island. In addition to serving as columnist for the Times-Star, he had also been a reporter and the paper’s editor.

Johannes retired a quarter century ago but wrote his column until five years ago.

He is survived by his brother, Jack, Hegarty reports. No public memorial is planned.
