Big cat at Alameda Point
A little bird told me last week that the late adventurer Steve Fossett’s catamaran is out at Alameda Point. So I took a ride out there a few days ago. As I was tooling down Oriskaney toward Ferry Point I saw two enormous, white hulls emerge. I checked in with the nice folks at Nelson’s Marine and they informed me that the maxi-cat was indeed Fossett’s.
Fossett, if you’re wondering, was a businessan and adventurer who set more than 100 world records in five different sports who is maybe best known for his nonstop, solo flight around the world in a balloon. The boat sitting at Alameda Point, now known as the Cheyenne, was responsible for some of those according to this piece, including a round-the-world trip Fossett and his crew made in just 58 days in 2004, before he took a break from sailing to focus on flying.
Fossett died when his plane crashed in the Sierras, in 2007.
I asked for more information, but the person in charge of the boat is in England and won’t be back for a month. I’ll update you if I get anything else.
In the meantime, here’s a cool video clip off YouTube of the ship sailing back when it was called the PlayStation.
