Your weekend: Love is in the air

Ain’t love grand? And ain’t it even grander that Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year? The fortuitous confluence of holiday and weekend means lots of stuff to do with your sweetie. Here’s the rundown:

Rhythmix Cultural Works, which is hosting “Hearts and Minds,” a group show benefiting the East Oakland Boxing Association’s Smart Moves program, is holding a free family Valentine-making workshop, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday with a Smart Moves art teacher. It’s all-ages. To reserve a spot, call 865-5060. Rhythmix is at 2513 Blanding Avenue.

Love your pet? This Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, Petco is doing photos of pet owners and their pets, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $5.99, plus tax. Towne Centre, of course, is at the corner of Park and Otis streets. Their phone number is 521-1515.

Alameda Theatre & Cineplex is hosting “Valentine’s Rock,” an evening of fine wine, gourmet food and music, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, February 14. The event ticket includes wine from Rosenblum Cellars and Rock Wall Wine Company, food from Angela’s Bistro and Bar and music from classical jazz guitarist Terrence Brewer and, at 8:30 p.m., a concert by oldies favorites Eddie & the Boppers. Tickets are $69 in advance, $79 on the day of the event, and are available through the theater’s website or at the box office, at 2317 Central Avenue.

The Fireside Lounge presents a “Hearts on Fire!” Valentine’s Day bash from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, February 14. They’ll have a DJ, karaoke (back for the first time in two years), dancing, a Valentine’s Day cocktail menu, chocolate, champagne and sexy gifts. There’s no cover. The Fireside is at 1453 Webster Street. To make reservations, call 522-7400.

The U.S.S. Hornet Museum is hosting a special Valentine’s evening dance from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, February 14. The evening kicks off with a free dance lesson at 7:30, and then they’ll have live music, including the jazz sounds of Stompy Jones and big band lounge classics performed by the Romano Marchetti Orchestra. Tickets are $40-$75, and the money form the event benefits the Hornet museum. For more information, call 521-8448 x282. The Hornet is docked at Pier 3 at Alameda Point.

Alameda Wine Company will offer flights of Champagne, Tawny ports and French cheeses to celebrate Valentine’s Day. They’re at 2315 Central Avenue.

We hear Pier 29 is having a special Valentine’s Day dinner for two, for just $59.95. Per the West Alameda Business Association’s website:
