Your weekend: Join the circus!
I’ll admit, I never thought about running away to join the circus (until Tuesday night, that is, after my toddler puked all over the place and I sat through an hourlong City Council presentation on CalPERS). But Alamedan, professional clown and Paden parent Jeff Raz is bringing the circus to town, and when they perform Sunday, it’ll include several groups of kids – and two Alameda school principals.
Now in its fifth year, Raz’s Circus for Arts in the Schools is a spectacular affair that includes professional clowns, acrobats, jugglers and more. This year’s iteration includes the clown cast of “Wonderland,” contortion and group juggling from Circus Bella, the Lincoln Middle School Juggling Club, Alameda elementary school principals Tom Rust and Shirley Clem.
The event is a fundraiser that pays for arts programs at Paden, Otis and Washington schools. Tickets are $12.50, $15 on the day of the show and $10 for seniors and kids, and are available online or at Toy Safari, 1410 Park Street. The 70-minute performances are at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Kofman Auditorium, 2200 Central Avenue.
Raz, by the way, will be reprising his lead role in Cirque du Soleil’s “Corteo” this summer.
