UPDATED Alameda police investigate Park Avenue homicide
Alameda police have released additional details about a homicide that occurred on Park Avenue last night.
Alameda Police Lt. Bill Scott identified the victim as Kelly Scott Kjersem, 40, of Alameda. The suspect was identified as Joseph Groom, 62.
Scott said Groom and Kjersem were hanging out talking and playing chess at Groom’s apartment in the 1200 block of Park Avenue when the pair got into a wrestling match. He said Groom went into his bedroom and returned with a 28-inch sword, which he used to stab Kjersem in the stomach.
A female friend who had come to the apartment and was cooking dinner ran into the street and yelled for help. Police received a 911 call at 8:57 p.m. and found Groom sitting next to Kjersem’s body. They said Groom admitted to killing Kjersem.
Scott said all three people had been drinking.
Groom is being held without bail on a homicide charge. His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
