Someone’s hiring …
You know the economy’s seriously in the crapper when people lining up for jobs at a retail outlet becomes news. As in, front-page-of-your-local-paper news. And featured on Bay Area television news as well.
Yep, Kohl’s is getting ready to open up at Alameda Towne Centre in April, and last week, they sent a postcard in the mail inviting each of us to join their friendly new team. “I should probably get over there and do a story,” I thought to myself. But the Journal beat me to the punch with a front-pager staring at me from the front porch this past Friday announcing the Good job news.
ABC7’s Lyanne Melendez also headed out there today to talk to job applicants, a pool that included a former sportswriter for a certain chain of local newspapers. (Crap. Not exactly living up to that “news now” thing, am I?) She said that 45,000 retail jobs were lost in America this past January.
The company is looking for 150 workers, and its postcard advertised part-time positions that include cashiers, loss prevention officers, cleaners and freight unloaders. They’re advertising job fairs through Thursday, for the store, one of 19 that the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-chain is opening this spring.
Unfortunately, according to the company’s website, its interview schedule for hourly jobs at the Alameda store is full.
