Time out for Tillie’s

A friend e-mailed the other day to say that Tillie’s, the iconic diner on Webster Street, was strangely silent, with a sign in the window indicating it was closed for maintenance. And what can I say, I couldn’t contemplate a lifetime without another shot at their delicious french toast. So I got on the horn to co-owner Barry Hemphill to find out what was going on.

Hemphill said the building’s having some plumbing issues, and that he plans to reopen, hopefully by the end of the month.

“That’s the hope,” the congenial Hemphill told me over the weekend. “But you never know with some of these old buildings, sometimes.”

Hemphill said he had to close December 16 due to said plumbing issues. He said his landlord’s got people redoing some of the plumbing under the diner, which is on Webster at Santa Clara.

I’ll be keeping an eye out to see when this Alameda institution reopens.
