Alameda’s top cop is scheduling a series of community coffees in an effort to reach out to local residents and business owners in an informal way.

“It gives us a chance to introduce some of our newer officers and to connect with people in the community,” Alameda Police Chief Walt Tibbet said. He said one of the department’s sergeants, Shawn Fernandez, came up with the idea.

The first coffee is scheduled for 7:30 am. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, January 27 at Tiny’s Dock Cafe, 1606 Webster Street; the second will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, March 9 at the Crosstown Coffeehouse, 1303 High Street. And Tibbet said there’s more to come.

Tibbet said neighborhood beat officers will also attend the coffees.
