Postscript: Alameda Power & Telecom

This week brought with it an epilogue of sorts in the story of Alameda’s telecommunications adventure: The release of the former Alameda Power & Telecom’s annual (independently audited!) financial review. The report had to be held to include details of the sale of the telecom business to Comcast, in November, and it offers hints about the [...]

Johnson: Island needs chain stores

I took a gander through my Google Alerts for Alameda last night (and it is amazing how much news our little Island generates, folks!) and found this interesting item regarding a forum of East Bay mayors, including our own, about retail development. The forum was sponsored by the International Conference of Shopping Centers in an effort [...]

The wheels on the bus come off

The Alameda Unified School District’s finance chief laid out the impacts of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget proposal for next year, and they are grim. Under the proposal, the district could lose more than $4 million in state funding for the current year and 2009-2010. And that’s not counting the $650,000 it will lose when the [...]

Kent Rosenblum stays in wine game

Kent Rosenblum may have sold his eponymous winery to global beverage giant Diageo early last year. But he’s not out of the wine business. At a newly leased, 40,000-square-foot warehouse on Alameda Point, Rosenblum is assembling a tasting room where a collection of small vintners will offer their wares. And Rosenblum himself hopes to have wines [...]

The Public Utilities Board picked a new name for our little electric company Monday night. And the winner is (drum roll please) … Alameda Municipal Power! (Punctuation added.) The name was leading in the former Alameda Power & Telecom’s online poll (and in a separate shoe-leather poll taken by longtime resident and ad man Lil Arnerich, [...]
