Library computers back online

I got a note from a reader a while back asking about the computers at the library, which at that point had been down for several weeks. Well, I finally got a chance to drop in there last week, and it looks like they’re up and running again!

Apparently, the folks running the library decided to hire a different company to manage its public access system, but when they took the computers down on October 15 to make the change, they found a lot more technical difficulties than they bargained for, library director Jane Chisaki said.

“I have one IT guy who worked every single day (the computers were down), including holidays,” Chisaki said. With the budget crunch on, the library could not afford to hire extra help to get the problem fixed sooner, she said.

But on November 24, the system came back online, Chisaki said. And while they’re still working out some kinks, she said it’s way better than it was before.

Meanwhile, the computer outage – while annoying to library patrons – did have a silver lining for the librarians.

“The librarians felt like they were doing real library work because people needed a little more help,” Chisaki said.
