Santa Claus is coming to town!
Well, not Santa exactly, but another white-haired guy: Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, has announced plans for members of his group to picket Alameda High School’s production of “The Laramie Project” this Friday! Instead of Christmas gifts, he’ll be bearing a big ol’ satchel of hate!
If you’ve never heard of Phelps and his crew, they’re the folks who seem to have an unending beef with the late Matthew Shepard, a gay 21-year-old college student who was beaten to death by two men outside Laramie, Wyo. a decade ago. They go around the country picketing productions of “Laramie Project.”
So they’ll be here at 6:45 p.m. Friday (unless they have a military funeral to picket, that is, or they get hung up in Washington, D.C., where they were slated to be picketing a bunch of embassies).
There’s a counter-protest: Alameda High School students will be there to act as a buffer between the kids and theatergoers and also to show support for the show’s performers. They’ll be there at around 6. If you’re interested in that, the information is here.
Tickets for the show, by the way, are $7 for students, $10 for adults, and are available at the Little Theatre door.
