We just received word from Capt. Jim Brock at the Alameda Police Department that Fred Phelps and members of his Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church won’t be coming to Alameda to picket Alameda High’s production of “The Laramie Project” after all.

We just got off the phone with Brock, and he said that Phelps and Co. decided to picket the funeral of President-elect Barack Obama’s grandmother instead. (Maybe the weather in Hawaii is just better this time of year or he had a hankering for macadamia nuts?)

Brock, who said he talked to the group this morning, even went so far as to contact the Topeka police. They told him the Westboro crew won’t come here without notifying local police first, because they apparently take a lot of heat when they come to California. He said the scheduled appearance here is slated to be taken off the group’s website.

We don’t know yet what the folks who planned to counter Westboro’s protest will plan to do, but if any of you are reading, please feel free to e-mail us at islandblog@gmail.com or submit a comment below.
