You know it’s a recession when …
Yes folks, things have gotten so bad that Peter Kahl and Cindy Johnson Kahl over at Speisekammer are offering a “recession menu” with half-size, half-price entrees. (And here’s a bit of trivia: Didja know that Cindy JK once owned Cafe du Nord in San Francisco?)
You could get a half portion of the restaurant’s wiener schnitzel, for example – normally “two fairly large pieces of meat,” with roasted potatoes – for $8.50. And they’ve got lots of other meat dishes, too. (Not sure you can get half a beer to go with that, though.)
Per Cindy Johnson Kahl:
I guess the whole idea of folks cutting back – thinking about the future … It would be hard for us to cut our prices – because our costs have gone up so dramatically over the last two years (fuel, food, beer).
Our entrees are pretty large here – we go through a lot of “to go” boxes at Speisekammer. So, why not offer half portions of some of our popular dishes. Our per person average may go down, but I hope that it keeps people from choosing to go to another restaurant – or stay home.
