Signs of the times

Last week we made a tour of the Island, counting lawn signs to get a feel for where our local electorate is headed on November 4. Well, an astute reader pointed out this really big No on 8 banner on the front of First Congregational Church on Central. Based on the signs we’ve seen, Alamedans seem to be leaning against the measure.

Statewide, polls on the same-sex marriage ban have seesawed, and many have called the race too close to call.

Just in the last day or so, our vice presidential candidates have weighed in on the issue: Democratic candidate Joe Biden said he’d oppose Prop 8 (though he did say in the recent debate that he opposed same-sex marriage); Republican Sarah Palin, in a break with her running mate, John McCain, said she would support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
