Rest in peace, Hawk
In case you missed it, former Journal editor Lucinda Ryan has a moving tribute in today’s paper to Hawk, a yellow Labrador who served the Coast Guard for four years and who was honored for his service with a retirement ceremony Thursday.
Indeed, Ryan had the heart to do what we could not. Hawk is being retired because he has to terminal brain cancer. He’s due to be put to sleep today.
Hawk and his handler, Petty Officer Sandor Csitar, have quite the list of accomplishments. According to the Coast Guard’s press release, they’ve responded to over 60 vehicle accidents and 10 bomb and suspicious package incidents. They were the first Coast Guard canine team to arrive in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. And they’ve provided security at the 2007 All-Star Game at AT&T Park and to a host of notables, including President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and several foreign dignitaries.
Roughly 100 people from a number of law enforcement agencies attended the ceremony, Ryan reports.
