Your weekend: Bat Boy!
We confess, we have long been fans of the black-and-white cult tab Weekly World News. True, the tab didn’t give us the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and it doesn’t fill a bottomless need for photos of cellulite-plagued starlets in bikinis. But it did present a unique gift to the pop culture world: Bat Boy.
Five years after Bat Boy debuted in 1992, some folks saw fit to create a musical based on his adventures. In “Bat Boy: The Musical,” our hero is discovered in a small-town cave. A family steps in to adopt him. But a spate of troubles leaves townsfolk suspicious. What’s a half-boy, half-bat to do? (Sing, apparently.)
The musical opened to acclaim and has played off-Broadway and in London’s West End. And now, just in time for Halloween, it’ll be at Altarena Playhouse. It opens tonight and will run at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through November 1. Tickets are $20, $17 for students and seniors. Altarena Playhouse is at 1409 High Street.
