Your weekend: Music in the air
Summer concerts are in full swing here on the Island, what with the free monthly gigs at Crab Cove and a free “Summer Serenade” show every Thursday night at The Mall Formerly Known as South Shore. This weekend, Rhythmix Cultural Works kicks off its own summer concert series with a pair of concerts for your listening pleasure. First up is jazz trumpeter/flugelhorn artist Jeff Oster, who’ll perform this Friday night with Grammy-nominated bassist Michael Manring, composer Lars Hidde and Alameda guitarist Carl Weingarten. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. On Saturday, Michael Sea and Island Fever play original tropical and nautical tunes in the key of Jimmy Buffett. They’ll play songs from their latest album, “Stealing Coconuts.” Tickets are $12. Rhythmix is at 2513 Blanding Avenue. For more information, call them at 865-5060 or go online here.
And while we’re on the subject of summer, all the cable pundits are predicting people will stay at home in droves this summer, due to the high cost of everything. They call it a “staycation.” And I got to thinking about all the fun little things our charming burg has to do, if you were to take a day to do a little sightseeing around town. So I gotta ask: If you were to take a vacation day to tool around Alameda, what would you want to do and see? We’ll post your answers next week.
