Your weekend: Central Cinema
Could these be the final days for Central Cinema? A few weeks ago, in the Journal, owner Mark Haskett complained that the nearly-opened Alameda Theatre and Cineplex is hogging all the movies this summer, leaving his single-screen, 49-seat house in the lurch. Now comes the news that Haskett is looking for a new location and may be facing eviction. As much as I’m sure I’ll enjoy the new theater, I want to express appreciation for the fact that we have a little place in town which, for one thing, isn’t as loud and scary for little kids as a big theater can be and whose employees are just so darned nice to said kids. A few years ago I took my son, then a toddler, there to see a movie that he walked out of halfway through, and they gave him a little toy on the way out the door. So thanks, Central Cinema. I support you. If you’re interested, they’ve got “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” through Thursday; they’ll run “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” starting on May 16. The theater’s schedule is here. And if you want to stay tuned about the theater’s fate, you can join its mailing list in the same place.
