Your weekend: The movies
It’s true: The new, seven-screen movie thee-ay-ter on Park Street will be open for business just one month from now, on May 24. And you’ve got two opportunities to get a sneak peek at the restored, 76-year-old gem before the reels (or digital thingamajigees) start rollin’. On May 21, the city and theater operator Alameda Entertainment Associates will host a black tie gala fundraiser featuring live music and treats from Asena restaurant. The money raised will be used to restore an Art Deco mural at the theater’s mezzanine level and its original, hand-painted curtains. Tickets are $100 and are available at the Bank of Alameda, 1416 Park Street, or online at http://www.alamedatheatreopening.com/. Then on May 24, they’ll be offering free tours, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. And if you really want to share in the magic, they’ll be unveiling some sort of commemorative plaque. The 1,042-seat theater, which cost about $9 million in public and private funds to restore, opens for business at 3 p.m. that day. More information on all of this is available here.
