Going once … going twice …

Wanna buy a file cabinet? Alameda’s got a whole lot of them for sale, in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Starting today, the city’s got file cabinets and a whole lot more for sale to the highest bidder on a public auction site, http://www.publicsurplus.com/.

Items range from the potentially useful (pickup truck tool boxes, stacking chairs, drafting table, deck chairs) to the totally random (old coffeemaker, dusty-looking side chairs, lockers, hose backpacks) to future museum pieces (typewriters!).

Public agencies are increasingly turning to sites like Public Surplus to sell unwanted stuff, and plowing those pennies back into the treasury. Not a bad idea, in these times of fiscal uncertainty.

The auction lasts through March 27.
