Mayoral pay raise?
The City Council is set to discuss changes to the city’s charter Tuesday. Among the changes in the charter language, some of which is three-quarters of a century old, are little things like removing the City Manager’s authority to create a “police secret fund,” requiring the city’s auditor and treasurer to have proper accounting credentials, giving the city flexibility to close city offices during holidays and purchase big-ticket items in case of emergency … and language that would allow for an increase in the mayor’s salary. Granted, it’s not like the mayor’s office is a high-paying gig now: Compensation is set at $200 a month, with an additional $50 per meeting attended. The question is how well the proposal will be received in these times of general budget misery. The proposed changes could be placed on the November ballot.
