Friends, Alamedans, countrymen … lend me your wallets
Did anyone catch the sales tax chart on the city’s website today? It shows that Alameda ranks almost dead last in the county in the amount of sales tax it rakes in per resident (only Piedmont did worse). The statewide and county averages for the past fiscal year ending September 30 were $141 and $148 a head, respectively. Stingy (maybe some would say frugal?) Alamedans spent just half that – $74 each. Maybe groceries, kids clothes and books don’t generate the tax dollars Auto Row once did (or the Target that Never Was may have). But maybe six stories of parking off Park Street will save us … if they ever open Oak Street up.
Anyway, the report is right on the city’s website at http://www.ci.alameda.ca.us/news/0802_salestax_chart.html .
